Russian At
Binghamton University

The State University of New York At Binghamton

In 1939, Winston Churchill commented that Russia "is a riddle wrapped in an enigma." For centuries, Russia has sometimes puzzled, sometimes frightened, and sometimes charmed the rest of the world. You can start to "unwrap" this enigma by studying in the Russian program at Binghamton University.

Study the Russian Language

Learn how to speak, read and write Russian. Don't let that alphabet scare you off! You'll be speaking and starting to read simple words within one week - and from there you'll continue to learn about Russian literature, music, culture and daily life as you improve your Russian language skills. If you complete the three-year language series, you'll be well-placed to find a job in one of the many firms that are building professional links to Russia and the surrounding region.

Study the Russian Literature

Learn about the rich heritage of Russian poetry and prose in an overview of Russian literature from the early nineteenth to the late twentieth centuries. Then build on that base with more specialized courses that deal with topics like "Literature and Revolution," "Women in Russian Literature," and "Russia's Great Novelists."

Study the Russian Culture

Have you ever wanted to know what a Russian samovar really does? Wondered where the onion-shaped domes on Russian churches come from? Wanted to find out what Russians think about others, including Americans? Wondered what kinds of movies Russians make and watch? Join "Russian Culture and Civilization" and acquire a broad understanding of Russian culture from the ninth to the nineteenth centuries. Then continue with "Russia and the World" to learn how twentieth-century Russian culture expresses Russian attitudes towards America and the west. Or, if you are interested in cinema, join the "Russian Cinema" course to study Russia's greatest filmakers.
